8 years ago (confession)

I wanted to write it in a very honest way. So I’m writing this as a letter to you as you are the only one who I could have always been entirely myself with.

You are my best friend and I’ve always known that. But I’m 13 today and I don’t want to admit that my dad is a better friend to me than a neighbor kid.

February 13th. Year 2005. We still live in Tula and mom is away this evening. It’s 9 pm and someone has rang the doorbell. As soon I open the door I see two boys, one of them a friend of  mine and the other one I wasn’t introduced to before but I secretly had a crush on him from when I was 11 I think. They are asking if I wanted to go out to watch a movie. You should have seen my face- It’s how happy I was!
As soon as I said yes I can hear that the door opened and you standing next to me. You asked those boys to go home and didn’t let me go with them as it was too late you think. I start begging but it makes you even more frustrated. It all spills out in a ugly mess of accusations and eventually you leave with anger, and I am so exhausted I do what I used to do, I curl into a ball and cry. The hopeless, messy kind of crying, spiked too with hot anger. It is filling me up and I decide to run away and stay with my gran tonight. I’m dressing up quickly, whipping my wet face, puting on my shoes as quietly as I could so you wouldn’t be able to hear, then I open the door…

“Sonya!”

I am already running away, thinking that that I need to escape. I don’t want to see you. I can hear you running after me somewhere far away as it took you a while to put your shoes on.

March 5th. I’m living with my grandma. Couldn’t go back home after that. You just don’t understand me. And I can’t live with that anymore. But it’s your birthday today. My mom says that you are very upset and you want me to get back home. I know that you’ve tried to call, but I don’t want to speak to you. I’m still too frustrated. But it’s your birthday today. I think I should call to say happy birthday.
Dialing a number, waiting on the line.

“Hello?”

I hung up.

March 15th. I’m at the theatre where you work, with my best friend. Just watched a premiere of a new play. I came because I knew you were not in it so I thought I wouldn’t see you. Still too frustrated. I think that I am doing the right thing to show you that I deserve some respect as well. I am 13 already, remember?
I put my coat on and I then I see you. You are talking to someone near the exit so there is no way I can escape again. I start walking towards the door, I can feel that you are watching me but that person is still talking to you and you can’t interrupt him. You almost called my name, but I just look at you and storm out of the building. My mom is trying to talk to me this night after we are back at granma’s. She sais that I need to forgive you. But I just can’t. I feel like you deserve it. And I don’t know when to stop all this nonsense and come back home already.

And then it all stopped itself.

April 4th. A horrible day at school, it’s been raining the whole day and I got wet through. We are having dinner around 8pm. My grandma made such an amazing pasta today! But for some reason we are sitting quietly as if we are expecting something.  The phone has rang. My gran picked up the phone and got all pale all of the sudden.

They said you died. Heart attack right in the middle of a play.

How many boys I've hung out with after that! How many movies I've seen late at night!...and how many theatre premieres I’ve been to…. Nothing matters anymore as the only thing I want more than anything is to come home where you will be, watching some move and learning your new role. How I’ll sit at the table and tell you a story about my day. How we’ll laugh together and you’ll joke about my messy curly hair. There are so many silly things in life we care about thinking that it’s what is important, forgetting, that important are not things. Important are people.
I will never be able to tell you that I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I was silly enough to waste our last months together. I’m sorry that I didn’t come back when you needed me the most. I’m sorry that I didn’t say Happy Birthday. And I’m sorry that I’ll never be able to tell you in person how much I miss you.

This was the hardest lesson in my life which is a big reminder of how people tend to take the genuinely important things for granted.
